About the Society

The Postal History Society, Inc., celebrated its sixtieth, or Diamond, Anniversary in 2011. To quote from John L. Briggs, Jr.'s fine article in Postal History Journal, No. 43, June 1976, p. 2, "On September 26, 1951, during CAPEX, at Exposition Hall in Toronto, following a luncheon of the Postal History Society (of Great Britain), a group of prominent philatelists [men and women] met to organize a Postal History Society for collectors in the Western Hemisphere."

The Society was incorporated in Washington, D. C., on November 14, 1951. In order to secure the advantages of a non-profit corporation, the Society was reincorporated in Delaware on August 18, 1989, as a non-profit entity operated exclusively for educational purposes, within the meaning of Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code (donations made to the Society by United States citizens are thereby classed as charitable deductions for Federal Income Tax purposes).

The Society publishes an award-winning Journal three times a year—number 1 appeared in May 1957 with Edith M. Faulstich as editor. See the Journals page for the content of recent back issues.

Most years, the Society has two General Membership meetings with a featured speaker, one in the Spring and one in the Fall, though sometimes we also meet in August at American Philatelic Society's StampShow. Our Annual Meeting is generally held in the Spring, in conjunction with the General Membership meeting. We choose to meet at philatelic shows around the country so that local postal historians may attend. There is usually scheduled a Dutch Treat informal dinner at a local restaurant on the Friday evening of such events—a good way to connect with like-minded collectors. Recent meetings were held in Boxborough, Massachusetts, as part of Philatelic Show 2014, May 1–3, 2015, and in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in conjunction with StampShow 2015, August 22–23, 2015. The next general meeting will be held in connection with Philatelic Show 2017 in Boxborough, Massachusetts, May 5–7, 2017.

The Society provides a medal for presentation, at the judges' discretion, to the best exhibit of postal history at APS-sponsored exhibitions. See the Awards page for more information.
